Females, definitely. Not for any particular reason, it's just always been that way with me. In my experience they usually make for the best of friends.
Keep one close male pal to do guy stuff with, though; the occasional tippling, enjoying a cigar, watching (American) football, talking about lasses, etc.

My closest friends are mostly male. I spend the most time with them, because we have the most things in common (if I were a kid, I'd be called a 'tomboy').
When I go to parties and try to spend time with the ladies, I've found that I'm bored in about 30 seconds. Last party I went to, the conversation was all about collectible dolls, something in which I have no interest whatsoever (I quietly slipped away). I also get bored listening to stuff about Tupperware, and which brand of disposable diaper is best. If they talked about music, computers, software, the new V8s going into Holdens, Formula One, restoring classic cars, politics, or world events, I'd hang around longer.
I tend to come out with anything, especially if I've had a few drinks, and if anyone's offended by stuff I may say, they can go get @#%$.

The kind men can't go to?
