US unveils new prison in northern Iraq

Sun Oct 30,10:36 AM ET

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The US military has opened a new prison with capacity for more than 1,700 detainees near the Kurdish city of Sulaimaniyah.

Fort Suse began operations on October 17 and the first inmates arrived on October 24, a US military statement said Sunday.

Captain Patricia Brewer told AFP the detainees had previously been held in other theatre detainment facilities such as

Abu Ghraib, west of Baghdad, and Camp Bucca, in southern

Iraq.

"The opening of Fort Suse is a big step in the transition of detention operations to the Iraqis," the statement said, quoting Major General William Brandenburg, commanding general of detainee operations.

"It will be the first facility to be completely turned over to Iraqi control. This complete transition of operations will take place after extensive training of Iraqi guards and only after they are completely confident in their ability to run this facility."

The site is an old Russian-built army training center that was renovated in a little more than two months with a workforce of about 400 and a budget of eight million dollars.

The prison will be handed over when "Iraqi guards are confident in their ability to maintain the same high-quality level of care and control currently maintained by coalition forces," the statement said.

Well, Mike, you have to keep in mind that it took 6 years after the Allies conquered Germany for it to ready for democracy.

But only 2 years after the Allies conquered Saddam , the brave Iraqi people have already voted several times. They're way ahead of the Germans at the same point in time!

The Allies are as patient now as they were in the 1940s. So even if it took the Iraqis as long the Germans (6 years) to be "up to speed" and ready to go it alone, the Allies are willing to help them through it too. It's not like making "Instant Coffee"!

RonInsane :)

Here you have a important date:

18th. of May 1848, Frankfurt am Main, Paulskirche.

That's when Germany said "OK" to the constitution of the Democratic Republic of Germany.

Just get rid of the thought, that the U.S: have "brought democracy" to Germany (at least)...

We had it running more than 100 years before you got rid of the last artefacts of slavery in the U.S., not to speak of voting rights for women ( Germany: Voting rights for women: 1848 ) .

GET LOST with this argument in the German context :D :D :D

All that means Mike is that we here in the US have had a democracy going on for a lot longer than Germany. Hmmm. And do you think if Germany hadn't been stopped in WWII that they'd have a democracy now? Really.

Melody and Instruments for the soul...
