I hear ya about obnoxious backing guitarists. I have a friend in LA who went through that for a while with the obnoxious guitarists who thought their shiznit didn't stink. She said screw it and went the karaoke route for a while. It ended up opening a LOT of doors for her.
Right now, since I don't know anyone here, I'm a solo artist. Hope to change that in a few months, after I get more comfy on stage and folks start to get to know me better.

Hey Deb, I'd love to hear you live someday. Meeting other musicians from the internet and jamming with them is a high point of networking online.
Open mikes can be difficult. Audiences vary from night to night. Getting out in front of people can be a challenge, but being a studio rat never gets anyone anywhere either.
Last night at my usual open mike (that I hadn't gone to in 4 weeks), it was primarily punkers in the audience (because the local punk club closed, the kids converged on Waldens' which did NOT make the guy running the show happy). On top of that, the high e-string on my guitar broke and I had to make do with using strictly backing tracks, which I'm not really all that comfy doing and it showed, BIG TIME (that, and I think I chose a bunch of downer songs, LOL), not to mention my voice being thrashed from trying to adjust to the climate change. On a positive note, people came up to me later and told me how cool my songs and backing tracks were, so I think I'll be fine once I get some performance issues worked out.

Ouch Helen, I truly commiserate. Its happened too often, bad PA, amps blowing, scratchy voice. Once we had multiple disasters - Colin's amp blew and then after he got another one set up, his guitar string broke. I was tired of bantering with the crowd and asked if there were any stand up comedians there... bad mistake and long story... ahahahahahahaha
I swear by something called Long Life Throat Tea, which is sooooo good. Oh yes, and copious amounts of Vit. C...
