Chris, do you get any US networks besides things like E! (Entertainment)? I mean like ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, WB, UPN or what are called "Superstations" like TNT, TBS or USA? If you do get any US telly, things like the Learning, Discovery and Travel Channels are pretty cool.
We used to have free cable for years & years, then a new cable company took over and I wasn't about to actually pay to watch the telly, lol. It's 99% junk, although a few real gems are to be found. We've got 14 broadcast (antenna) channels in my area (3 are religious tv) and that does just fine for me, since I'm not much on watching TV.
Quote: we're just getting used to the fact that you can't pause TV or fast forward the adverts
Hahaha, I bet you found yourself clicking the cable remote trying to pause or FF a few times, didn't you?
I'm still in the VHS era and lovin' it. Since TV is stinko most the time, it's nice to pop in a classic like "Casablanca" or a foreign film. I don't get too excited about new movie releases - too much FX & not enough substance. (Oh-oh, I better not get myself started on film critique, hahahaha!!! )

Paul - can't they run the cable above/over the tracks as they do phone lines on telephone poles?

Quote: One with old Chinese movies - that one I can't wait to tuck into when I can wrestle the remote from Shaun
Yeah, cable is great for old movies - I prefer them to almost everything contemporary coming out of Hollywood! Where were these oldie Chinese movies filmed? Mainland(pre-Mao?), HK, Taiwan?
Hmmm...the "remote fight" is one of the tough by-products of having cable. You could pick up an inexpensive "universal remote" and do a battle of clicks, lol! I share a quite small flat with a bro - when the cable was being piped in free, we ran the incoming cable signal into a "Y splitter" - from the splitter, one line went to his area and the second into my room. Just had to pick up the Y splitter and a length of cable to reach my room. No remote fights at all, hahaha.

That horlick's sound good! - I do have to fess up to occassionally having a glass of warm milk or two late in the eve.
The lungi wore out a long time back - tears and such. But I used to wear it about the house pretty often. That was back at the family's house and my Mom called it "Ron's Dress", hahaha! John showed me how to tie it correctly, but I just kinda made a lump of a knot in the front and that worked okay.
Quote: One of my bros-in-law is American and he's learnt to eat with his fingers and sit cross legged and everything ahahahahahaha. His accent hasn't changed though, but he does the head nod pretty damn well
Oh yeah - and the cooking - all those spices!! I believe they are raising their kids with a combo of the culture things - the eating with fingers, language, clothing. They live in Washington state, west coast so I rarely see them these days. But I sit cross legged a whole lot - not lotus or nuthin' - just crosslegged on the floor. In fact, I like to sleep on the floor (carpeted), lol.
Isn't there like some kind of head nod/bob that a female does that's related to flirting(in India)? And you're speaking of teaching the bro-in-law southern India states accents? If not, Seismo might be able to intruct him on the proper use of "y'all"!
Here in Minnesota - us'n Yankees - it's flat midwestern, lots of "Yah" (from Scandinavian "Ja") and "You bet", a cover-all affirmative response. If you ever see the film "Fargo" (set in and shot in Minn) they have a lot fun with our plain, dull oddspeak. "Fargo" page w/wav file samples
Actually, I don't think I've ever seen a Mel Gibson film. I'm kind of a film snob (of sorts) and really enjoying complaining about how "they don't make 'em like they use to". There have been about maybe 8 good films since 1980, which saw a fine one in "Tess".
That's kinda scary about the cycle and the sari! Getting clothing and/or body parts caught in tires/motors is not on my things to do list! But it is a funny story, being that you were intact, but the garment wasn't. heheheh...

Quote: RON! hahahahahahaha Trust you to pick up on the 'remote'
Yeah, you can have worlds o' fun with a universal remote, especially if the other person doesn't know you have one. Hold it behind a sofa cushion and every once in a while change channels or slowly turn the volume up or turn. Then you can share puzzled looks with your victim, who'll probably end up saying " *!%*+#@$!* telly!! ", hahahaha.
Quote: from what I've seen on the trailers have lots made in HK during the 60s & 70s
I know that there's a lot of film production going on in HK. We get some major shoots here (in Minnesota), but many major US films are actually filmed in Canada because the dollar is worth more and there are less unions to deal with there. Have you ever been in a HK shot film? Maybe as an "extra"?
I've read and heard reviews and opinions on "Passion", but I tend to agree with you about forming a strong opinion without having seen a film. I'm not sure, but I think Debbie may have seen/heard that apparently some people thought if people see the film they'll rush out of the cinema and immediately lynch the nearest Jew. But that just hasn't happened. I read where one guy tried to crucify himself, but the idiot ended up calling 911 (emergency rescue) with his free hand after he found out pounding a nail into his other hand wasn't as nearly as cool as it looked on film!
But unless basic Christian theology has changed in the last month or so, Jesus' death wasn't because of any group - Romans, Jews, Martians or whichever. Rather, it was the whole of humankind who "caused" it. It was a willed and purposed death which, along with the resurrection, was/is considered of God's divine design and doing.
It's oddly funny that last night I had the telly on and there was a newer production of "Jesus Christ, Superstar" being shown. It was the big controversial thing in the early 70s. As I watched the production, I realized how much a "tempest in a teapot" comes and goes. A lot of buzz & spin, this way & that way, but as time goes along such things become much ado about nothing in perspective.
Another thing that popped out was that people, after seeing "JC Superstar", weren't driven into an anti-Semitic rage running in the streets to burn down kosher delis, even with the writer's (Webber and Rice??) having the Jewish leaders (Sanhedrin) singing stuff like:
- Jesus Christ Superstar soundtrack lyrics -
"This Jesus Must Die"

I am, in fact, making a well informed decision. I don't need to cut off my head to know it will kill me. Even if this movie is the closest portrayal of Christ's crucification, I DON'T like blood and gore. I know how Christ died - I have an imagination. I'm stressed out enough as it is, dont need graphic details of bodies ripped to shreds with the whips and pushing and torturing even while carrying the cross. Every single review I've read has said how gory it is - and gratuitously so. I'm NOT going.
This film earned millions for these producers - I'm not going to put more money into their grubby little sensation-mongering pockets.
We all read reviews and then decide whether we want to watch something or not. We base our decisions on one thing or another. If you don't then you'll be going for every crap movie or show in town, more fool you. That's not close minded, IMHO. That's simply knowing what stresses you out and avoiding it.
And Ron too has made his own mind up about most movies after 1980…
“Actually, I don't think I've ever seen a Mel Gibson film. I'm kind of a film snob (of sorts) and really enjoying complaining about how "they don't make 'em like they use to". There have been about maybe 8 good films since 1980, which saw a fine one in "Tess".
(sorry Ron, you have every right to believe what you believe - I think that most music of today sucks anyway... heh)
You didnt have much to say about that Chris. I don’t think I’m the judgemental one here…. Hmmmmph. Anyway, I should probably be turning the other cheek and shutting up...
I hope the one lesson the "Christian" right learn from Christ's sacrifice is NOT to seek revenge, and also NOT to invade other countries on some BS pretext. What’s the use of going on about how he died for us if we continue to fight and kill each other? If the movie makes people contemplate WHY he gave his life, it has served his purpose. If we are too churned up inside with the pain of it to even think of WHY, then what’s the point? Christ died for peace and love. Turn the other cheek, love thy neighbour, do unto others. We don't need a movie to realise the significance of that.
Anyway, Good Friday I'm going to mass, will lead the choir and do a solo of "Were you there when they crucified ma Lord". Will probably read out the part of the mob like I did last year.
