About English singers sounding American, Debbie; I've always thought, with some exceptions (e.g. Peter Noone, John Lennon) that it's odd how most Brits' accents "drop off" when they sing.

Mike, nice try, but artists don't earn a pittance here. Unfortunately the F. Club is a charity, and pay their artists standard rates (you really dont want to hear what that is!!!) - no bar cut or take from the door. :stress . We play there cause its a nice venue and has really great sound. Plus its a charity promoting the arts, so its a good cause! Plus of course, I like the folk there :D

Only the corporate/events/hotel gigs pay. I once did a gig bringing in the millenium and got nearly US$1.5k for the 3 hrs work ahahaha, but that was with the 9 piece dance band. Now I don't do events much cause I prefer the exposure of a public gig. We do some, but its a bit too intense - you have to show up hours before and hang around till the sound has been set up and do sound checks etc; basically you hang around for hours before you actually perform, and its a bit tiring when you're coming from work, or have work the next day. One time we did a gig in the children's swimming pool... yes, IN the pool ahahahaha :aua

Funny things, accents. I have quite a recognisable indian accent, but it's not so obvious when I sing. And I speak with brit pronounciation, but when I sing, I use the american light "a" for words like "pass", "chance", "can't" etc.

:dunno

Yet when I do choral stuff I use straight up brit pronounciation. I think the american style is more suited for casual pop/rock styles, and the brit is more "propah" and polite! I'd sound really prissy with my normal pronounciation doing rock ahahahahaha

Also, Debbie, I think folks who are exposed more to a certain language can dedect the subtle and regional quirks "outsiders" would miss. Most Americans likely couldn't make much of a distinction between Cockney and BBC-proper. It's all British. Like Midwest Amer-English is different sounding from say, NY or Massachussett Amer-English, but non-Americans might not catch the distinction.

But the cool thing for Brits is that Americans usually think all Brit accents sound upperclass and sophisticated, hahahaha!!

Thank you Rev, you :langel , who is always innocent as a :ghost

:wgrin

I love accents of all kinds, it's quite fascinating to watch mouth movements. Its so funny, when Alan calls me I say his name like "Aah-lun" and he always asks, "debbie, why do you always say my name with that thick indian accent..." :aua

Well, do you have a slow drawl??? How long would you take to say

"I'm a :langel "

:wgrin

I speak very fast, but not as fast as most other Indians - have learned to slow down from living in HK. I knew someone who was from Atlanta (well, at least he worked in Atlanta!). I never knew WHEN he was going to finish anything, everytime I thought he was ending a sentence he would say another word - it took that long between words ahahahaha

When folks hear someone talk real south, images of "Deliverance" and the sounds of "Dueling Banjos" often come to mind. It's the opposite of the "Brit sophistication effect".

Of course there are regional southern accents; Deep South, Appalachian and Texas are all distinctive to the ear.

The Carter Family, with Mother Maybelle, sounds quite Appalachian to me - perhaps because they were originally from Virginia. Mother Maybelle was one of my first guitar heroes. Link to low quality wav of her & the family doing their classic version of Wildwood Flower circa 1930.

well except for mick and keef...

if there is one family americans disdain is the royal family... a bunch of freeloaders sucking tax dollars off the british people... who do nothing except be a tourist attraction.
