“Actually, I don't think I've ever seen a Mel Gibson film. I'm kind of a film snob (of sorts) and really enjoying complaining about how "they don't make 'em like they use to". There have been about maybe 8 good films since 1980, which saw a fine one in "Tess".
Correct, Debbie! As I sez, I'm particular in my film tastes. Having been a film student at one time makes me even more of an oddball film snob, lol. But it's not for any great global socio-political reasons, but rather artistic, originality and quality reasons. And I'm not a big fan of FX. To me, if you see a theatre/good film production of "Our Town" (Thornton Wilder), you see the best FX ever. Using a bare stage and a very bare minimum of props, the story's message (Carpe diem) is even more effective. Also there are certain genres that just don't get my interest ;action, adventure, slasher-gore, things blowing up and others (with very few exceptions). I enjoy a good ghost-thriller, for example, where the atmosphere of the film spooks you instead of a knife weilding demon or the like.
As far as views go, I think people should take 'em from all quarters and weigh them all to get a grasp on what's what. Although what Hitler did was pure evil, I think people should read "Mein Kampf"; in fact, the world should have - before he got a chance at power - to read his vision & plan of madness.
Anyways the best of the last 5 or so years of the film lot would include "Book Of Stars", "Whatever", "Brokedown Palace" & mebbe a few others. But as with everyone else, that's just my taste!

I grew up hearing the Tennesee Ernie Ford version of that (if you heard of him, haha). He had a great voice and wonderful personality. Even today when I hear that song sung with soul, it does indeed make me tremble.

It's Python's out-and-out funny stuff that I love - Now for something complete different, Holy Grail, their 1/2 hour 70s telly show. I passed on "Brian", though.

I love Monty Python too. Holy Grail was a scream, I didn't much care for Life of Brian.
The main reason I will not see the passion is because of the violence. I think I've posted enough times how much I hate violence. This is why I dont watch TV any more too. The minute I see the likelihood of gore I'm gone. This is also why I cannot watch blood sports either. ugh.
I read that two people actually died from watching the movie - its that graphic.

Secondary is the fact that enough "Christians" think that all non-christians are going to hell, and this will likely fuel their self-righteousness. In this current "we're doing all this for God" climate, this movie is not likely to be promoting tolerance. If it does, I stand corrected.
Some of my favourite movies are Fish Called Wanda and Bridget Jones Diary. I've watched Tess, but I'd read the book first. It wasnt bad. Sad.
I have to take Nexium every single day for excessive acidity, so if I can possibly avoid stress inducing situations I will.

That does make a bit more sense, especially since you're on an isle! You must have to use the ferry often, I suppose.
